Jetset Kitchens provides high-quality custom built kitchens and cabinetry.
All of our kitchens and cabinetry are built in New Zealand… in our factory… because we believe in supporting the local economy.
Melamine, often known as low-pressure laminate, is the most prefered kitchen material in New Zealand. It looks and feels a lot like the high-pressure laminate used on bench tops, but it’s a lot thinner and less expensive.
Melamine laminate is pressed onto MDF or particle board to create a pre-finished panel that is scratch and stain resistant. The best product is MDF melamine board, which is dynamically stronger and less likely to chip when cut. The board’s cut edge is finished by clashing (edge banding) with a 2mm PVC edging that matches the board’s colour and pattern.
Melamine is popular because it is the least expensive of the cabinetry treatments, is long-lasting, and is available in a wide variety of colours, designs, and finishes.
Acrylic is done in-house so it saves customers more money.
Sheet vinyl foil is shrink-wrapped and attached onto the surface of an MDF panel in the thermoforming process. The method enables for a variety of door face profiles to be used, as well as a seamless wrapped front edge on doors and drawer fronts. Vinyl’s elasticity makes it more durable and resistant to bumps and scrapes than paint finishes.
Highly textured, satin, and gloss finishes are available, as well as a wide selection of colours, including some that match melamine colours, allowing thermoform doors to be matched to melamine panels if desired.
Most people refer to high pressure laminate as “Formica.” It is made by saturating layers of paper with melamine resin, then pressing them together under high pressure and heat to form a single sheet of laminate.
The laminate sheet is pressed onto a substrate (typically particle board) between 30mm and 70mm thick to create laminate benchtops. Leading edges can be square clashed or shaped to a top and bottom radius of 6mm to 15mm.
When it comes to laminates, there are many levels of quality. Generally, the thicker the laminate, the better; however, thicker laminates will not form around a radius of less than 9mm, but thin laminates will. Premium laminates, such as textures, metallics, and high gloss, are also more expensive than laminates in the standard range.
Laminate benchtops account for over 80% of all benchtops sold in New Zealand. Their appeal originates from the wide variety of colours and finishes available, as well as the fact that they are attractive, durable, long-lasting, simple to clean, and cost less than other benchtop options.
Granite is a natural stone quarried in many areas across the world and transported as slabs to New Zealand. Before being fitted to the cabinetry, it is trimmed to size, polished, and sealed. Granite is porous and requires re-sealing every few years, but it is durable and attractive.
Granite countertops are approximately 3 to 4 times more expensive than laminate countertops. They also need to be templated once the kitchen cabinets is built, so there will be a 10-day wait between cabinet installation and benchtop installation.
Engineered stone is a man-made substance comprised of resin and stone chips that have been pressed together under severe pressure. The benefits include a uniform density across the slab and a nearly impervious surface that does not require sealing. Engineered stone comes in 20 and 30mm thick slabs that can be mitred to provide a thicker leading edge and comes in a wide selection of colours. It’s one of the easiest-to-care-for benchtop materials, however, like granite, engineered stone benchtops must be templated before manufacture and installation.
Acrylic is a non-porous synthetic resin-based substance with outstanding hygienic features. Its major benefit over other materials is that it may be bonded or mended discreetly. Acrylic benchtops come in a wide spectrum of colours, but they, like stone, must be templated before production.
